This species was described by Moore (1888) as Haritala auroralis, which was later transferred to Pagyda by Hampson (1896).

Pagyda auroralis is similar to P. fumosa (Kenrick, 1912), but it can be distinguished by the forewing with a subbasal line and the hindwing with a postmedial line not reaching the anal angle; in P. fumosa the subbasal line of the forewing is absent and the postmedal line of the hindwing reaches the anal angle (Kenrick 1912, p. 551).
