Notes (optional)
Oroplema oyamana (Matsumura, 1931): http://www.jpmoth.org/Uraniidae/Epipleminae/Oroplema_oyamana.html
Oroplema oyamana Matsumura stat. rev., comb. n. : Moths of Borneo Part 8.https://www.mothsofborneo.com/part-8/epipleminae/epipleminae_8_1.php
(Epiplema oyamana Matsumura, 1931, 6000 Insects Japan-Empire, p. 942.
Epiplema dealbata Warren, sensu Holloway, 1976: 683.
Epiplema simplex Warren, sensu Inoue, 1983, Moths of Japan, 2: 311.) I have not been able to access these three sources. They appear in Moths of Borneo site
Epiplema simplex (= Oroplema oyamana); Inoue, 1983, Moths of Japan 2: 311 -https://ftp.funet.fi/index/Tree_of_life/insecta/lepidoptera/ditrysia/geometroidea/uraniidae/epipleminae/oroplema/
iNaturalist : https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/324322-Oroplema-oyamana/browse_photos
JD : This should be Oroplema simplex (Warren, 1899),
OD : Novitates zoologicae, Vol 6 pg 322 #26 - https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/3258924#page/354/mode/1up - described from S. India (Nilgiris)
Refer to differences between oyamana & simplex here - A Taxonomic Revision of the Korean Epipleminae, with Phylogenetic Comments on the Involved Genera, Sohn & Yen – Fig 2 (T), & remarks in description of O. oyamana – “This species (oyomana) was misidentified as either Oroplema simplex (Warren, 1899) (as Epiplema simplex) or Dysaethria indignaria (Walker, 1866) (as Epiplema indignaria) in the Japanese and Taiwanese literature for a long time. However, the true Oroplema simplex is exclusively distributed in S. India and Sri Lanka” . As per this above article, “Oroplema simplex can be distinguished from oyamana by having a narrower dark patch at the forewing hind margin and a straighter antemedial line of the hindwing.”
However, I have an image from Coorg that clearly resembles oyamana rather than simplex, so not able to resolve this fully.
Maybe oyamana is also found in S. India? Will be posting this.
Check my observation & remarks - Observation_283223
GI: I am aware of the simplex sp being recorded from Nilgiris but I could not access either the Korean or the novitat zoologicae paper. The korean paper is still not opening. Also We need to check Moths of Japan 2: 31 where E simplex has been equated with Oroplema oyamana ( see my note above) that the Korean paper says is wrong. I have not been able to access this paper too. If you see the image in jpmoth.org /moths of borneo, then this should be oyamana. The characteristics given in the OD that identifies simplex species is not evident in this one. Since the distribution includes Taiwan, Malaysia etc, there is a possibility that oyamana flies in South too. We need the Moths of Japan vol 2 to really seal this id.
Your image in Observation_283223 differs quite a bit from the one I have uploaded. Its likely neither oyamana nor simplex.
