Penicillaria simplex (Walker, 1865)
1) OD : Eutelia simplex, List of the Specimens of Lepidopterous Insects in the Collection of the British Museum, 33 pg 824 - https://archive.org/details/listofspecimenso3334brit/page/824/mode/1up?view=theater
2) Bombotella simplex, The Macrolepidoptera of the World, Seitz, Vol 11 pg 353 - https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/252298#page/363/mode/1up & Pl 32b
3) Moths of Nepal part 2 , Pl 42/13

https://www.papua-insects.nl/insect%20orders/Lepidoptera/Euteliidae/Euteliinae/Penicillaria/Penicillaria%20simplex.htm, mentions similar looking species & their differences
SS: Agree with ID.
GI: Some observations, that is confusing me:
1.Moths of Nepal images and digital moths of Asia images do not match. In fact Moths of Nepal part 2 , Pl 42/12 is similar to what is given as P simplex in http://www.jpmoth.org/~dmoth/Digital_Moths_of_Asia/90_NOCTUOIDEA/03_EUTELIDAE/01_EUTELIINAE/01_Penicillaria/Penicillaria_simplex/Penicillaria_simplex.htm
2. Except in Observation 270775 I don't see much details or the white of the HW
3. If you look at https://www.papua-insects.nl/insect%20orders/Lepidoptera/Euteliidae/Euteliinae/Penicillaria/Penicillaria%20simplex.htm then the dorsal flap that is mentioned is not to be seen here. But even at that site the enlarged image of simplex shows the dorsal flap. Colour and patterns though it is said cannot be used for id, yet it is differing in the different references given
So I am not able to conclude which one factor/factors you have used to id this as simplex. Can you be more specific?
JD : vide Holloway in Moths of Borneo, simplex has "sometimes a narrow orange marking medially on the dorsum" . I have used this character and another bright orange patch on the submarginal below the apex that is visible in simplex observations in the references, for the id. Holloway in MOB for the diagnosis of jocosatrix also states that jocosatrix differs from simplex in the absence of paler rufous markings - which I suppose are the above mentioned. The genus id of Penicillaria on MOB states that that for this genus "The hindwings are basally white", it is just that the HW is mostly hidden in this observation.
SS: I agree with Jonathan. These two features are consistent across most images of simplex.
SS: I am publishing this species page.
