Previously treated as a subspecies of luteipes which is found in NE India but Lophophelma ruficosta is listed as a seperate species from luteipes by Holloway based on differences in genitalia. Lophophelma ruficosta is treated as valid genus by Plotkin & Kawahara 2020.
