Similar species: Macroglossum sitiene Walker, 1856
Seperated from M. sitiene as follows: first and second discal lines curved but the second line dilated distad posteriorly to vein M1. Abdomen base with two prominent black spots in divergens, which sitiene lacks, and seventh segment of the abdomen with a prominent medial spot.

Note: This species is part of the Macroglossum heliophila complex and Kitching & Cadiou (2000) treat this as Macroglossum divergens heliophila Boisduval, [1875]. white Melichar et al. (2018) treat the South Indian and Sri Lankan populations as Macroglossum divergens Walker, 1856.
